  • The TOEFL iBT 2026 Format: Every Section, Task and Timing

The updated TOEFL iBT runs about 1 hour 25 minutes across 120 items. Reading and Listening are two-stage adaptive; Writing is Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion; Speaking is Listen and Repeat plus Take an Interview. Scores are reported on a 1-6 scale.

  • What Changed in the TOEFL iBT in 2026 (and What to Unlearn)

The test is about half as long, Reading and Listening are now adaptive, Integrated Writing and the old four-task Speaking section are gone, and scores are reported on a 1-6 scale. Most pre-2026 Writing and Speaking practice no longer matches the test.

  • TOEFL Speaking Practice for the 2026 Format

TOEFL Speaking is now 11 items in about 8 minutes: 7 Listen and Repeat items and 4 interview questions. Repetition accuracy is trainable quickly; the interview rewards elaboration, not length.

  • A TOEFL Study Plan Built for the 2026 Format

Four weeks at about 80 minutes a day. Week one diagnoses, weeks two and three target the weakest sections, week four rehearses under timing. Weighted towards form-focused items, which are now a third of the test.

  • IELTS vs TOEFL: How the Two Tests Actually Differ in 2026

Since the January 2026 update the two tests are further apart than ever. TOEFL is now about half the length, adaptive, and entirely computer-scored; IELTS keeps a face-to-face speaking interview and long-form writing.
